Léonard Misonne, Belgian Master of Pictorialism
(Born 1870 in Gilly (Belgium) - Died 1943 in Mons)
We think we know Léonard Misonne: a pictorialist who makes soft-focus landscapes.
For years I have been fascinated by Léonard Misonne and it has always been one of my goals to find out who the photographer is.
Besides the large collection of vintage prints we also have a library of historical magazines and books.
Through research in this library I found an interesting interview with Léonard
Misonne by Cyrille Ménard (a well-known French art critic) from 1910 in
Photo-Magazine.
Léonard Misonne was 40 years old when he became a famous and respected
photographer.
The article "Les Maîtres de la photographie, Léonard Misonne" (The masters of photography) explains his vision on photography and his techniques.
In this period Léonard Misonne didn't see himself as a pictorialist. He even questioned the gummistes (the gum printers) who didn't respect reality but gave a vague impression of it.
The pictures of Léonard Misonne are still available, but no longer on-line.
