Jos. Rentmeesters: Opera in the Studio
The Belgian photographer Jos Rentmeesters (1892-1969) is a unique photographer who portrayed opera stars, actors, dancers and variety theatre artists from the twenties and thirties in a very particular way.
The theatre and the opera house were rebuilt in the studio. Remarkable are the settings in which the artists are photographed. The setting supports the pose of the actor or dancer. This setting was actually rebuilt in the studio or was simply inserted on the negative. Rentmeesters’ photographs for the Koninklijke Muntschouwburg in Brussels are among his best.
