Edmond Sacré master of snow and ice
Edmond Sacré (Ghent, 1851 – 1921) was one of the pioneers of Belgian pictorialism. He was one of the few pictorialists who was also a well-known professional photographer.
As a professional photographer he was known for his city views and industrial photography. Beside this succesfull professional career he was a very good pictorialist.
Sacré didn’t use big themes in his photography. He was a modest landscape photographer who loved the snow and winter landscapes. Sober and esthetical compositions of threes in the snow with the fine play of lines are his signature.
The carbon print with its deep dark blacks was the most appropriate technique for this kind of landscapes.
Edmond Sacré started his career in 1870 and became member of the Association Belge de Photographie in 1874. His work was exposed in different countries and he won 56 international prices with his photos.
Now you can find Edmond Sacré’s work in the major Belgian photo museums and collections. He is mentioned in all the books about Belgian photo history.
